Why I Support Mrs. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf For President in 2005; READ UNITY PARTY PLATFORM

I support Mrs. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf for president of Liberia because I believe she can do the job, without the corruption that's characteristic of our national governance. Ellen has consistently refused to join the gravy train in Liberian politics. Do you remember when she refused to take a senatorial seat she won in 1985 while others could not wait to shamelessly fight over token seats alloted to them by the 1985 elections conspirators.? Didn't she? Have you also forgotten when she publicly condenmed Taylor for human rights violations during the early stages of the civil war, and completely dissociated herself from his criminal enterprise? Didn't she? For these and many more reasons, I strongly support Ellen's 2005 candidacy for president of Liberia.

Now tell me, why don't you support her?

Thousands of Ellenites Swarm Margibi, Bong Counties

In her characteristic fluency, Mrs. Sirleaf has been expending the surging political capital to articulate her vision of devolution of power in a Unity Party-led government. "The time has come for Liberians to have a say in who becomes their president, representatives, senators, superintendents and mayors," she told one of the gatherings, adding, "We in the Unity Party do not speak mere words without actions. The Party's senatorial and legislative candidates were voted for by citizens of their counties through the party's county conventions held in their respective counties."

Amidst thunderous applauses, she further noted, "You see, your legislators and senators will now be answerable to you, because they know that you do truly have the power to decide whether they represent you or not." The up-roar of applause became even louder that the female political icon stood smiling at her supporters and admirers, the report said.

The Unity Party is recorded as the only party which conducted county conventions allowing citizens of various counties throughout the country to elect their representatives and senators to run on the Party ticket. Historically, political parties in Liberia select representatives and senators in Monrovia to represent their counties with no regards to the views of citizens of those counties. In most instances, the citizens had barely even known the names of their representatives and senators prior to and even after assuming the position. Political observers believe that if the Unity Party wins the anticipated presidential and general elections, Liberia will truly see significant changes in its political landscape as elected leaders will now be answerable to their constituents, an essential democratic precept.
