Ellen Withdraws Lawsuit Against Former NPFL Rebel Defense Minister

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf says she is withdrawing her case against former Grand Bassa County Senator Thomas Woewiyu, and reserves the right to refile when she leaves office in 2012. But will the case survive the Liberian statutes of limitations for defamation?

The President said the TRC’s responsibility is to “sanctify” the country for the healing of wounds, adding that the problems of abuses and injustice were as old as the founding of the nation, declared independent in 1847. She called on all Liberians to have “contrite and compassionate” hearts. But she emphasized that, “We must address the past fully” or “our path will be impeded.” She said the tendency to overlook the past will encroach on the future.
