Ellen Blocks Maritime Funds

This paper has reliably learnt that President elect Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has ordered the withholding of Liberia's maritime funds until she takes over next January.

Sources could not give reasons for her action but said she directed the withholding of "all corporate and maritime revenues intended for 2005." The sources said Madam Sirleaf's order was directed to LISCR, which manages Liberia's maritime funds.

Harry Greaves Confirms Corruption in Gov't

Mr. Greaves said, "I am terribly disappointed in the Chairman, because what we are seeing is not what we discussed in Accra before coming to Liberia." The former Economic Advisor said the advisory job in the NTGL was his first ever government job, noting, "during this period, I was always opposed and vocal before the Chairman about the level of corruption that was taking place with impunity." Mr. Greaves said the Accra Comprehensive Peace Accord apportioned jobs to organizations and not individuals and wondered why Chairman Bryant could not dismiss corrupt officials and ask their factions to nominate others into government.

He said his resignation from the NTGL came very late because he was supervising an ECOWAS audit. "When that ECOWAS audit report comes out, the public will be shocked," he said.
